Danish bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen has died suddenly at the age of 58. One of the key mainstream jazz bassists, his rich, swinging tone was heavily associated with the sound of Oscar Peterson for over 30 years.

Always the bridesmaid and never the bride at the Mercury Prize, the most credible UK music award, independent jazz record labels have nonetheless seen success in having their acts appearing on the short list for the prize over the years.
